Borneo Sunsets: 15 Incredible Sunset Photos from Malaysian Borneo

Catching legendary Borneo sunsets doesn’t require a luxury resort. In fact, the absolute best, raw evening views on the island happen right from the rugged beaches of Bako National Park.
If you are chasing the ultimate golden hour, you need to plan your trek to arrive at Bako’s coastline just before the sun drops. As daylight fades, the sky completely transforms. It shifts from a bright, piercing blue into a deep canvas of fiery orange, soft pink, and brilliant purple reflections. Because Bako National Park is famous for its massive, weathered sea stacks and jagged rock formations rising straight out of the ocean, the sunset creates a striking silhouette against the glowing horizon.
The experience here feels completely wild and disconnected. There are no crowds blocking your view, and there is no filtered perfection. Instead, you get the rhythmic sound of the waves hitting the shore, mixed with the distant calls of proboscis monkeys settling into the mangrove trees for the night. The damp sand creates a massive mirror, reflecting the intense colors of the sky directly under your feet.
To maximize your time, keep these three essential tips in mind for your visit:
Watch the Tides: A receding low tide exposes the wide sand flats, which provides the absolute best reflections for your landscape photos.
Stay Grounded: The best shots are captured low to the wet sand, framing a sea stack directly against the burning horizon.
Don’t Pack Up Early: The twilight colors often turn a vibrant magenta roughly ten minutes after the sun completely dips below the ocean line.

These are my favorite sunsets in Malaysian Borneo are from the island in Bako National Park. I also love the sunsets on Mabul Island.
Which are my favorites? My favorite sunsets from this trip include these in Borneo, the stunning views from the Dead Sea ,and the desert of Wadi Rum (both in Jordan).

Wow. it’s so gorgeous! Like many photos, it’s even better in person. After a day of hiking and photographing wildlife, I had just put down my camera to relax, but this view got more impressive every five minutes. I want to go back!
