Welcome to Visit50.com

Where in the world is Todd now??   By popular demand, I’ve launched this travel blog website, Visit50.com. I’ll chronicle my adventures around the world, beginning with this trip.  Along the way I’ll post little anecdotes, observations, stories, and of course plenty of photos.  I’ve been posting regularly so check back often – enjoy!

The 50 and 50 by 50 name refers to my travel goal of visiting all 50 U.S. States, and 50 countries, by age 50. I explain it at this link

What does “50 and 50 by 50” mean?

Now that I’ve launched this blog, I thought I should explain the title. I want to visit all 50 states, and 50 countries, by age 50. So it’s 50 and 50 by 50, hence the name of my travel blog, Visit50.com*.

For those of you keeping score at home, I was at 25 states and 20 countries to start the trip (I’m 32). So I have 17.5 years to visit 30 countries, which seems daunting considering I might not travel on big trips as much once I’m settled with a family, but this trip will help bring me much closer.
Considering only 4 of my countries were in Europe, and that’s where countries are most clustered together, I’m in decent shape to get there.

I’ll update my tally of where I’ve been at this link, and link countries I’ve written about from that list as well.

What constitutes a visit?  You can play by any rules you’d like, but mine are that I need to leave the airport or the highway and actually do something in that state or country for it to count. Have a meal, take a picture of an attraction, etc.

My trip begins!

My trip begins!   I just left the frozen tundra of NYC, which just had 20″ of snow (6th largest snow storm in NYC history), to go mostly warm countries near the equator. So stoked!

My trip is free on air miles, so I needed to go through Vancouver and Beijing to use them. Here’s the Air Canada plane that’s transporting me, and the view from the air in Vancouver:

I’m hoping to post lots of photos on this site, so hopefully wifi connections will be plentiful in my budget lodging.

Going to Asia??

Wait, you’re going to Asia?  Whaaaaat? For how long??  Months?!? When did you decide that?   That was the typical reaction. I’ve always said that when I’m in between jobs I’m just going to book a big trip and travel.  In my industry I only get 2 weeks of vacation per year, and they can’t be used together, so I can’t typically visit Asia during a job vacay. It takes so long to get there that it doesn’t make sense to just go for a week. And while the flight across the world can be pricey, it’s soooo cheap once you arrive. So I just decided it a little before Xmas and booked the main flight into Hong Kong to get started. It all happened so fast.

Tentatively my flight back is from Tokyo on Feb 23rd but that’s moveable for a minimal fee, and as of now it seems likely that I’ll move it back.
